Small Fry Skinny Jeans Sew Along

August 11, 2013

Small Fry Skinny Jeans

A long long time ago I talked here about sharing a free pattern for some skinny jeans in size 2T only. Well it is finally ready and here are the Small Fry Skinny Jeans. I’ve included photos of a few of the different versions I’ve made. I love the fit of these trousers – they’re skinny but not so skinny they’re uncomfortable – and depending on the fabric you choose, they can be dressed down for casual wear or dressed up for a wedding.

Small Fry Skinny Jeans Stars

These star ones are my favourite so far – I’d quite like a pair for myself and I love them with this T-shirt. I used silver topstitching thread for the jeans and that inspired me to finally finished off Rowan’s Nani Iro T-shirt, also with silver topstitching thread. I made Casper one several months ago and cut Rowan’s at the same time but got a bit side tracked so I’m glad it still fits.

Details include:

  • Front patch pockets
  • Back yoke and back patch pockets
  • Half fly (seen in a lot of RTW clothing)
  • Separate waistband and facing
  • Flat front with going round from the front belt loops
  • Adjustable waistband with buttonhole elastic
  • Belt loops
  • Skinny fit (you can use some non-stretch fabrics that have a little give in them, such as quilting cotton but for denim and twill I’d recommend stretch versions)

Due to all of the different stages I have decided it would be better to spread the tutorial over a few posts and will be running my first sew along, starting next Monday, the 19th of August. None of the stages are particularly difficult and as we work through each one I will be happy to answer any of your questions. I have created a button for those of you who would like to join in and add this to your blog posts or sidebars. I’d love it if lots of you join in – leave a comment at the bottom to let me know if you will and please feel free to share.

I’ve got the supplies you’ll need listed towards the bottom of the post. The pattern will be available from next Monday and the Sew Along will be split up as follows;

Free 2T Pattern and Preparation

Day 1 – Pockets and Back Yoke

Day 2 – Half Fly Tutorial

Day 3 – Leg Seams

Day 4 – Adjustable Waistband Tutorial

Sew Along Link Party

I will update the links here as these posts become available. Even if you are not using the free pattern I’ve provided a lot of the techniques in these tutorials could be applied to other trousers patterns, especially the adjustable waistband that I add into almost all trousers and shorts that I sew. The half fly is also very handy for slim fitting trousers where they would be difficult to wriggle over hips but you don’t want to add a full zip fly.

Small Fry Skinny Jeans Half Fly

The 2T is designed to fit a child with a 51cm waist (20″), 54cm (21.25″) hips and an inside leg of 38cm (15″). They have enough ease in the back rise to accommodate a disposable nappy but I haven’t tested for a cloth nappy. It is just possible to manoeuvre them over a child of this size using a faux fly instead of the half fly option (I have done it with earlier versions) but is much easier with the half fly.

Small Fry Skinny Jeans - Cords

I am in the process of grading this pattern and the ‘Small Fry Skinny Jeans’ will be my next paid release. It will include a few more options that those included in the free Sew Along pattern, such as classic inset front jeans pockets, a second waistband option and a zip fly option in addition to the half fly. I will be putting a call out for testers for the pattern on my Titchy Threads Facebook page in the next few weeks. If you’d like to know when the pattern is available you can sign up for the Titchy Threads mailing list by creating an account here.

    Hi
I have never done a sew along before, can you tell me how it works, do you just post instructions on this site or is it a live link or what, I want to join in but I live in australia does that matter?

    • Reply Laura August 13, 2013 at 8:52 am

Hi Donna. I will post the instructions here so you’ll be able to follow along no problem. It’s just split into sections to break it down into manageable sections and to give you a chance to ask questions if you have any. It will still be here for you to refer to later on too.

The fabric is just perfect for them! I love the cut and style too. I wish Roman was still a size 2 so I could make some for him.

This are absolutely adorable! My son is tall and lean, so most pants that fit his leg length don’t fit his waist. Skinny AND adjustable waist?! I’m in! I can’t wait to see them on him. ๐Ÿ™‚ Thank you so much for this! If not for this, he would have to spend fall and winter in sweat pants.

    • Reply Laura August 15, 2013 at 1:38 pm

I’m pleased to hear you’ll find it so useful Michelle. I have that same problem with my eldest son – he is age 2 or 3 for waist but 5 or 6 for height. It’s great we’re able to sew so can make our sons something that will fit better.

Oooh cool a sew along. I can’t wait. I’m planning to participate. I’ll blog about it too. ๐Ÿ™‚

I don’t have facebook to apply for the tester position but I am very interested. Is there another way I can apply?

    • Reply Laura August 15, 2013 at 8:48 pm

That’s great to hear thanks Lee. Could you drop me an email with the ages you can test for (the size your children wear rather than their ages) and a little bit of information about your sewing experience (to laura@craftstorming.com). I’ll be happy to add you to add you to a mailing list instead.

Oh, I wish I could sew the skinny jeans along with you …we are on vacation next week. I will “jump” on it right after we are back home for sure! My little girl is 4 but she’s quite skinny and small, she’s wearing mostly 2T (98) clothes now. I have just bought a gorgeous pair of skinny jeans in red (!) for her ๐Ÿ˜€

Hi Tunce, that’s shame but the sew along will still be there when you return ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m planning to have a little prize for my favourite pair (announced later today) and that will be held open until the end of August. Also, for my size chart 2T is 92cm so I’d recommend checking your daughter’s inside leg measurement. If she’s taller but her waist would fit then you might get away with lengthening them a little. Red skinny jeans sound fun. Have a lovely vacation!

  • Reply CraftyHourMom August 19, 2013 at 4:21 pm

I’m joining in! Today, if I can find something in the stash. One question – for a girl, I imagine I could just reverse the fly lap direction pretty easily, right?

    • Reply Laura August 19, 2013 at 4:24 pm

Hi Laura. Yes – you will see tomorrow but I have made it clear in the instructions whenever you need to reverse anything if you’re sewing for a girl. Pleased to have you sewing along.

      • Reply CraftyHourMom August 19, 2013 at 6:41 pm

One issue – I’m having trouble getting the pattern to print on letter paper. The instructions say it can be done on either letter or A4 but when I try print it, the print dialog box only lists the dimensions for A4.

        • Reply Laura August 19, 2013 at 6:49 pm

Hi Laura, the border is designed so it will print on both sizes of paper. You will just have different sizes outside the border depending on which size you are using. Have you tried to actually print a page? If it doesn’t work can you email me a screenprint and tell me what software you are using? You need to select actual size or not scaled. Also, test page 9 first to make sure the 2″ box is measuring correctly.

          • CraftyHourMom August 19, 2013 at 8:12 pm

OK, thank you!! I fiddled with the custom page sizes on the printer tray and it looks like it just might go. The margins at the bottom are not printing, but the triangles are, so I should be able to make it work. ๐Ÿ™‚

          • Laura August 19, 2013 at 8:20 pm

Thanks for the update Laura. The only thing I’d say is that if you’re not getting the bottom line then you might not be getting complete triangles. I know some people have found clicking ‘center and auto rotate’ helps before but I don’t know if the new Adobe update might have changed that.

        • Reply Laura August 19, 2013 at 7:05 pm

I’ve looked into it a bit further. There is a new option in adobe where you can select ‘Choose paper source by PDF page size’. When I have this turned off I get the page size in A4, when it is on it is Letter size. Could this be the issue for you?

Apparently this has been causing issues where patterns are printing at the wrong size. I have just tested my pattern with the option turned on and off and my boxes still measured correctly but I would still recommend checking the boxes on page 9 before you print the rest of the pattern. I hope this helps.

These skinny jeans are adorable! I have a feeling they may not be skinny on my little pint-sized girl, but I’m sure they will be cute! I’ll blog about the pattern on Friday as well ๐Ÿ™‚

I swear I am sewing along – it just might not this week ;op does that still count as sewing along ;o( I think these are adorable, and i even have a stretch pinstripe denim on hand to make them for baby girl…. this week is just CRAZY!!!

    • Reply Laura August 20, 2013 at 8:11 pm

Not a problem Suzanne, you can sew along when things calm down a bit. That denim sounds amazing – can’t wait to see them ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m sewing along for my daughter who is two….I forgot to cut the fly opposite as someone mentioned above….she won’t care and I bet no one notices ;0) …or I hope….

    • Reply Laura August 21, 2013 at 7:37 pm

I’m sure it won’t matter Jessica and, as you say, no one else is likely to notice.

      • Reply Jessica Jeffcoat August 21, 2013 at 8:19 pm

oh wait…I did sew it right! I was thinking you cut it out differently in the beginning but that wasn’t right…I saw the directions (duh) and realized that you just switch it when sewing, not at the cutting table…

        • Reply Laura August 21, 2013 at 8:22 pm

That’s great Jessica. You just need to make sure that when you trim one of the fly extensions you trim the left leg for a girl instead of the right. Then you can continue and reverse the directions where I’ve labelled it.

I have a couple of questions about the wonderful “car” sport coat your son is wearing. Would it be possible to open up a dialogue with you by email or FB messaging? I have to make a jacket for a wedding and I was wondering about the fabric. Regards, Mimi Hill

  • Reply Jennifer Hill March 11, 2014 at 6:15 am

This is my first project. I have bought lightweight cotton knit, which you do not mention, will it be OK to use? I have searched everywhere for pyjarma pants, just like these, to make for my grandson, for winter in South Africa.

    Thank you so much.

    • Reply Laura March 16, 2014 at 10:52 pm

Hi Jennifer, sorry for not replying sooner. The pattern is really designed for woven fabrics. You could certainly try it in a lightweight knit and you could leave off the half fly and have a simple elastic waistband.
